Spatial Join or Intersect

Hello,

Is there a way to do the equivalent of a Spatial Join or Intersect with out having to make a new shapefile?
I just want to update a field in a point layer with the index grid it falls on.
Oh this has to be doable in ArcGIS 10.1 Basic. Thanks
